At SeraphimGate Systems, we understand that storage isn’t just about capacity—it’s about capability. Our latest project, affectionately named Kronos, exemplifies our expertise in creating custom solutions tailored to our clients’ unique needs. This all-in-one storage monster combines the power of a media storage and transcoding device with ample capacity to back up virtual machines and containers from our Proxmox cluster. With nearly 100TB of usable space, cutting-edge hardware, and a focus on reliability and scalability, Kronos is built to handle anything from home media servers to enterprise-level backup solutions.
We know that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to storage. That’s why SeraphimGate Systems excels at delivering solutions that are customized—not off-the-shelf. Whether you need a streamlined setup for basic file storage or a powerhouse like Kronos, we design systems that align with your specific requirements and budget. While this build is perfect for high-performance applications, it may not be the right fit for everyone. That’s why we encourage you to contact us for a custom quote. Together, we can craft a solution tailored to your storage needs.
Diving into the Hardware: A Build for Performance and Future-Proofing
At the heart of Kronos is a carefully selected combination of components designed for performance, reliability, and scalability. Here’s a closer look at each part and why it was chosen.
Processor: Intel Core i7-14700
The heart of this build is the Intel i7-14700, a high-performance CPU that might seem overkill for a NAS. However, we chose it to future-proof the system and take advantage of excellent pricing on this part. Its capabilities make it perfect for running virtual machines (VMs) or other demanding workloads, ensuring this system remains relevant for years to come.
Intel has faced stability concerns with some higher-end CPUs recently, but by selecting a non-"K" variant and updating the motherboard to the latest BIOS and microcode, we’ve mitigated those concerns. Stability is key in a NAS environment, and this CPU delivers it alongside exceptional performance.
Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus Z790M Elite AX
For a solid foundation, we opted for the Gigabyte Aorus Z790M Elite AX motherboard. Priced at around $200, it’s an outstanding choice that combines reliability and flexibility. The board supports upgrades to higher-performance "K" series CPUs if needed and includes a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port—a plus for modern networking.
Looking ahead, we plan to upgrade this NAS to a 10Gbps network connection, and the Z790M's expandability ensures compatibility with our long-term goals.
Memory: 64GB Crucial DDR5 (2x32GB, 5600MHz)
Stability without sacrificing performance is crucial for a NAS. We chose Crucial DDR5 memory for its robust performance and reliability, clocked at 5600MHz. With on-die ECC (Error Correcting Code), this memory adds an extra layer of data integrity, perfect for mission-critical storage setups.
Storage: Enterprise-Grade Reliability
This build is all about storage capacity and reliability. Here’s the breakdown:
Main Storage: Eight Toshiba Enterprise SAS 12G 18TB drives, delivering nearly 100TB of usable space in a Z2 RAID configuration. These drives are optimized for high workloads, ensuring long-term performance and reliability.
Log Drives: A pair of Samsung 990 Pro 1TB NVMe drives. These are ideal for caching and log purposes, with onboard DRAM providing superior random IOPS performance without relying on host memory. While the EVO series could work here, the Pro series offers better durability and performance, making it our preferred choice.
HBA Card: LSI Logic 9300-8i
To harness the power of the enterprise SAS drives, we’re using the LSI Logic 9300-8i HBA card, which supports 8 SAS connections at 12Gbps. This ensures the drives operate at full speed, maximizing throughput and reliability.
Case: Silverstone CS382
The Silverstone CS382 case is a standout choice for NAS builds. It features:
Eight hot-swap 3.5-inch drive bays, with room for an additional internal drive and a front-panel 5.25-inch bay.
Support for micro-ATX boards and ample PCIe expansion slots.
Space for robust cooling solutions, including large air coolers or up to 280mm water-cooling setups.
While cable management can be a challenge with all bays filled, Silverstone includes thoughtful features like rubber grommets and tie-down points to keep things tidy. One caveat: the stock fans are loud and benefit from motherboard fan control for quieter operation.
Cooling: Thermalright Peerless Assassin
For cooling, we chose the Thermalright Peerless Assassin, an air cooler that keeps the CPU at a comfortable 65°C even under heavy load. While water cooling might offer lower temperatures, air cooling is more reliable and perfectly suited for this build’s 24/7 operation.
Why These Choices Matter
Each component in Kronos was selected with a specific goal in mind: balancing performance, reliability, and scalability. This build reflects SeraphimGate Systems’ commitment to creating solutions that meet today’s needs while preparing for tomorrow’s demands.
